From RPA to Agentic Automation: the Evolution of Processes

Business process automation is undergoing a phase of evolution that expands the role of established technologies such as Robotic Process Automation, integrating them into more advanced and intelligent models. RPA continues to be an essential component, especially for executing operational and repetitive tasks across both legacy and modern systems, but its scope now fits within a broader and more dynamic ecosystem.

Agentic Automation

The ongoing shift is moving toward a so-called “agentic” paradigm, where automation no longer simply follows predefined rules but is enriched with decision-making and adaptive capabilities. In this scenario, intelligent agents introduce a new level of understanding: they analyze context, interpret natural language, and support real-time decision-making, working alongside more traditional automation components.

Within this model, software robots maintain a well-defined operational role, handling task execution with precision and consistency. The distinguishing element lies in the collaboration between different components: agents “think,” robots “execute,” and people guide the overall process, intervening in strategy definition and exception management.

This evolution does not replace traditional automation but extends its value, creating an orchestrated system capable of adapting to change and progressively improving business process performance. The integration of artificial intelligence and RPA thus increases productivity and flexibility, while keeping human contribution at the center.
