Routines change, offices empty out, and with them, the security habits that keep company data safe throughout the year tend to weaken. For those who study cyberattack patterns, the summer months represent a window of opportunity: distracted employees, unsecured networks, and devices being used outside the corporate perimeter. It is a combination that cybercriminals know well and exploit methodically. Open networks or networks protected by passwords shared with dozens of strangers, managed through infrastructures over which no IT department has visibility. Connecting to such a network to reply to a few work emails can expose corporate credentials to relatively simple interception techniques, such as man-in-the-middle attacks, in which a third party silently positions itself between the device and the network. The same applies to airport, train station, and public networks in general. The problem becomes even more complicated when shared devices come into play. A work laptop used by children to watch videos, a company smartphone connected to an improvised hotspot, an open browser session on a shared device: every seemingly harmless scenario can leave traces, cookies, saved credentials, or open sessions that become vectors for unauthorized access. Then there is the issue of seasonal phishing. Fraudulent emails increase in August, often disguised as holiday-related communications (fake booking confirmations, airline refund notifications, urgent alerts from banks or suppliers). With people's minds elsewhere and their attention threshold lower, the likelihood of falling for them increases. Some practical precautions: - Always use a corporate VPN when connecting from external networks - Avoid accessing corporate systems from personal or shared devices - Do not save credentials in browsers - Always verify the authenticity of communications requiring urgent action For organizations, August is a good time to remind employees that cybersecurity does not go on holiday.
